Orchids are among the most spectacular and diverse of all flowering
plants, which you can enjoy all year long with the right orchid care.
They come in vast varieties of shapes, colors, sizes, and fragrances.
Once you understand the basics of orchid care, you'll be able to grow
and flower them for many years.

Raising a healthy plant means having healthy roots. Blooming places a
heavy burden on the plant so it needs to be able to provide enough
energy and food to support flowering. Occasionally a dying orchid will
bloom as its "swan song" right before dying. Some other reasons as to
why your orchid may not be flowering is it may not be getting enough
light, needs more food, or perhaps the plant is in too small of a pot
and the roots don't have enough room to branch out.

A good indicator as to whether or not your orchid is getting enough
light is leaf color. Generally speaking, the leaves should be a bright
green rather than dark green. Dark green indicates too much light,
while reddish green indicates too much light.

When fertilizing your orchid, take care to use an orchid food specially
formulated for orchids and follow the instructions on the label. In
general, less frequent fertilizing may stunt growth and inhibit
flowering; and more frequent fertilizing may burn the roots and leaves
and inhibit flowering.

If you need to repot your plant, be sure to remove all dead roots that
are usually dark-colored, soft, and mushy. Sometimes they may be dry
with a fiber running through the middle of the root. Center the plant
with all of its roots down in the pot and add moistened bark until the
level of bark is just below the bottom of the lower set of leaves. Wait
a week before resuming your normal watering and fertilizing routine.

Orchids can make great house plants if you pick the right one for your
home.These orchid care tips and techniques should keep your orchid
looking healthy and beautiful for years to come.
